About Geoff
Geoff began training as a teacher in 1969 and took part in a "school refusers" project in the East End of London. This identified a strong desire to work with disadvantaged youngsters in the community rather than a general mix in the formalized classroom situation. However, he began by working in a Hospital School for children suffering with epilepsy. This was his first experience of working in a multi-disciplinary environment and began his interest in the workings of the human mind. He began his studies there and has continued ever since.
For three years he worked as a Residential Child Care Officer in units for disturbed adolescents and as a Deputy in a community home before training for three years, full-time, at Southampton University. In 1977, he qualified as a Social Worker and took up a post of Probation Officer. Having had six years of experience working with children, he now broadened his area of expertise by working with offenders of all ages, and families going through acrimonious divorce.
By 1990, Geoff had accumulated a store of knowledge about human behavior, personality and the psyche, through studies but mainly experientially. He has worked with dysfunctional families, disadvantaged, disaffected and abused children, psychopaths, sociopaths, murderers, rapists and pedophiles. He learned to maintain empathy whilst keeping a certain professional distance but not without a great deal of self-searching, doubt and being, on occasions, overwhelmed by man's inhumanity to man. His search to fully understand himself, as well as others, will always his skills.
As well as one-to-one counseling he teaches African Drumming, runs workshops, groups, lectures at Bath University and Wiltshire Colleges.
He has begun, with Jill Sudbury, The Wellbeing Clinic in Marlborough and works with his other son, Keef, running the Akasha Yoga Space, also in Marlborough.continue.
In 1991, he began working as a Counsellor alongside his full-time job as a Social Worker but this had to be kept on hold between 1994 and 1996 when he joined a Child Protection Investigation Team. This involved investigating charges of child abuse and interviewing the victims and the perpetrators who were often family members. At this time, he was also involved in child protection studies at Leicester University.
In 1996 he decided that his work could fully evolve if he started his own private practice and this was the beginning of what is now The Wellbeing Clinic in Marlborough. He also began Kaya Drums. This is now run full time by his son, Alex.
His further studies as a Psychotherapist covered Humanistic, Existential, Psychoanalytic, Behavioral, Cognitive, Eclectic and Integrative Theory and Procedure. This reflected his earlier work, especially in crisis intervention, where a quick response was often needed and a comprehensive "tool kit" of skills enabled him to more easily meet his clients’ needs. Geoff went on to study for a Diploma in Hypnotherapy.
Geoff is now able to offer a service to adults, children, couples and families which brings in all
